KASHMIR: IF TERROR PREVAILS…

Kashmir is often called "Paradise on Earth." Right now, this paradise has changed for the better, focusing on development and growth. The economy of Kashmir is improving because of efforts and investments in infrastructure, tourism, agriculture and local crafts. More tourists are visiting, attracted by Kashmir’s beauty and safe atmosphere due to untiring efforts of the security forces. As on date, over 12 Lakhs tourists have already visited the region this year which is on the way to break all records. Better roads and airports are making it easier for people to travel and for goods to move around. Socially, things are looking up too. Programs for education and job training are helping young people gain important skills. Better healthcare services are improving the well-being of the people. Kashmir’s rich culture is being celebrated, with more appreciation for traditional arts and food. Craft fairs and festivals are bringing the community together and fostering pride in their unique identity. In addition, more than 60% of registered voters participated in Lok Sabha and local elections this year which reflects people’s affirmations to peace and development in the region.

Despite these positive developments, the region is now once again facing serious challenges due to a recent spurt in terror attacks. On October 20, 2024, a tragic attack resulted in the deaths of seven civilians, including a local doctor and six non-local workers, targeted at a construction site in Ganderbal. Another significant incident near the Line of Control in Gulmarg resulted in the loss of three soldiers and two civilian porters. This rise in violence, especially after a great election turnout shows that our neighbor is frustrated by the peace and development in the region.  The implications of such incidents are profound. If such acts continue unabated and terror prevails, it would cause a dent in all the progress the region has made in all spheres. Such incidents may send a message to the world that the region is not safe which is far from reality. This would eventually lead to the industry of tourism“the back bone of economy of Kashmir” slowing down. Many livelihoods will be adversely impacted as it would affect the travel agencies, taxi services, guides & pony services, hotel industry and other related services. Many individuals from different parts of the country come to Kashmir for working at constructions sites, orchards, and other places. Attacks on non-local workers reflect the risks for people who come from outside Kashmir for employment, especially in agricultural and construction sector.  Such attacks may affect the inter dependency of Kashmiri population and migrant workers. If this continues, people will be discouraged to look for employment in the region which would eventually decrease the work force.

Education, a cornerstone of societal progress, also faces significant hurdles and if terror prevails, it may lead to closure of schools and colleges for extended periods once again. For our students to be at par with the rest of the society, it is necessary that they are given a normal childhood and education without any uncalled interruptions and stress. Without a solid educational foundation, the younger generation may find it challenging to secure stable employment, perpetuating cycles of poverty and unrest. If terror prevails, the region will once again see internet blackouts which will have cascading effect in all spheres. In the recent few years, we have seen a lot of investment done by MNCs and different companies of India. Such attacks only bring uncertainty to the investors’ minds and it would eventually scare away the investors. Same would be the effect on the front of infrastructure development which is essential for Kashmir’s progress as it drives economic growth, enhances accessibility and improves quality of life. Furthermore, the healthcare system would face significant pressure. Hospitals, which should function as centers of healing would become overwhelmed. Additional and stringent security measures will lead to many individuals facing unnecessary stress, anxiety, and trauma that will complicate their everyday lives. Additionally, in a region known for its inclusivity and hospitality, the presence of violence threatens to undermine these cherished values.

While current trends of violence present significant obstacles, the pursuit of peace and development must prioritize the safety and well-being of all citizens. The hope for a peaceful future lies in the hands of the people, who must unite to rebuild their society, ensuring that the region is nor marked solely by past struggles but as a beacon of hope, prosperity, and inclusivity for future generations. Together, the people of Kashmir can cultivate a future where their paradise flourishes amidst harmony and shared aspirations. It is time now that Kashmir does not look back but marches ahead towards development, peace and harmony. It is time to identify and isolate such terrorists and their support systems in the country.
