"Remember, our leadership too takes help of our posts to expose Kashmir on the international stage, so you cannot go wrong. I must also caution, there are no rooms for mistakes because we are becoming a laughing stock.”

Tariq Shah, the head of Propaganda Agency in Islamabad was addressing the new lot of youngsters tasked to create a false narrative on Kashmir.

He then asked Ali to speak.

“Well, I would like to tell about the most glaring gaffe. Our permanent representative to United Nations, showed a photograph of an injured girl from Gaza as a victim of atrocities in Kashmir.” Ali said dismally.

Iqbal was next to add.

“Similarly, our social media postings using edited pictures, many of which were taken from  Syria and Palestine, mixed videos with edited voiceovers etc, all claiming mass devastation in Kashmir after 05 Aug 2019 got exposed. Our claimed losses of 40 lives in the first two days of the abrogation too got badly exposed. People realized that if the internet was closed and movement was restricted by the administration during that time, how unrest could take place?”

“So, what we are saying is that we have to maintain a balance between sensationalism

and misinformation.” Tariq said. Then noticing the somber faces, he tried to interject some

humour. “Well, all bloopers are not attributable to us though. The one where it was said that

Germany and Japan were neighbouring countries was not ours.” His ears met muffled

laughter. He added – “And statements that Africa was an emerging ‘country’ or that China

was building a train that will exceed the speed of light were not ours.” This time the laughter

was much louder.

“And yes, vintage photos of Kashmir get caught very easily due to pixels and quality. ”Tariq came back to the focus area. “Now worst issue that could have happened is that the atrocities of Baluchistan were shown to be from Kashmir…..now I call this a betrayal against our Country.” He said while clearly staring at Fathima. “Would you like to say something Fathima?” He added.

Clearly embarrassed, Fathima cleared her throat and said – “Sir, it was a mistake…but

frankly, we find more photos of atrocities in Baluchistan than in Kashmir. There is just no

news of atrocities in Kashmir. Our agents there have tried their best…but….” She was

candid.

“Anything else?” Tariq said with enquiring eyes.

“Yes, fake images of a protest in Lucknow were shown to be from Kashmir.”She added

sheepishly, leading to loud laughter which quickly died in light of a stern glance from Tariq.

“Ali, give some more examples.” Tariq demanded.

“Sir, images from Bollywood movies were used to propagate that Hindu terrorists had

entered Kashmir. A mother of a 2016 Quetta bomb blast, mourning loss of her son was

shown to be an atrocity in Kashmir. In addition, a Pashtun actress who was a victim of

domestic violence was made viral as a woman thrashed by security forces in Kashmir. Even

the killings of Kashmiri Pandits were used to show latest atrocities.” Ali explained.

“And as I said, our leaders use our material in their media interactions …. One of our

ministers used an unrelated and old video of an incident from Panchkula, a place in Indian

state of Punjab to falsely project brutality of security forces in Kashmir.” Tariq said. He then

gave out the closing statement.

“We know that our international credibility is in tatters, our economy is in shambles, we

are in a debt trap of China, Baluchistan is simmering, our Frankenstein monster of terrorism

has turned against us, political situation is unstable as always, a tug of war continues

between the Army and democracy and our Kashmir dream is broken…..but we have to

continue with our efforts…. All the best !!!!” and remember…..no bloopers please.
