Balochistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir are two regions that have long been mired in conflict and struggle, both politically and socially. Despite the claims of progress and development by the Pakistani government, the harsh realities faced by the people of these regions paint a very different picture. For decades, these areas have been neglected, their people marginalized, and their resources exploited, all while they remain under the control of a distant, indifferent government. From poor healthcare and skyrocketing prices to the pervasive atmosphere of fear and unemployment, the people of Balochistan and POK face a dire situation that continues to worsen with each passing year.

Balochistan, the largest and least developed province in Pakistan, is home to a predominantly ethnic Baloch population that has long been demanding greater autonomy and rights over its own land and resources. While the government of Pakistan continues to claim that the province is witnessing significant development, the ground reality is starkly different. Balochistan has long been a site of political suppression and human rights abuses. The Baloch people have been demanding greater autonomy and control over their resources, but instead of addressing their concerns, the Pakistani government has resorted to heavy-handed tactics to quell dissent. Political leaders, activists, and journalists in Balochistan are often subject to arbitrary detention, forced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings.

The province is also plagued by insurgency, with several Baloch nationalist groups calling for independence or greater autonomy. The Pakistani military’s operations against these insurgent groups, along with the increasing militarization of the region, has created a climate of fear and insecurity among the people. Ordinary Baloch citizens live in constant dread of military operations, disappearances, and violence. The healthcare system in Balochistan is in a state of disarray. With a low number of hospitals, medical facilities, and healthcare professionals, the people of Balochistan are left to fend for themselves. Rural areas are particularly underserved, with many residents forced to travel long distances to reach the nearest healthcare facility. The lack of essential medicines and equipment further exacerbates the situation. People in Balochistan often face avoidable deaths due to the unavailability of adequate healthcare services.

The Pakistani government has failed to prioritize healthcare in the region, and despite claims of investment in development, Balochistan’s healthcare system remains woefully inadequate. Malnutrition and preventable diseases are widespread, especially among children, further contributing to the province's dire social and economic conditions. Balochistan's economy is in shambles. Despite being rich in natural resources, including gas, oil, minerals, and fisheries, the province remains one of the poorest in Pakistan. The people of Balochistan continue to live in poverty while their resources are exploited by the government and multinational corporations. The lack of job opportunities and the widespread unemployment are major contributors to the province’s economic woes.

Inflation and skyrocketing prices of basic goods have only added to the suffering. With limited employment options and an economy that is largely controlled by the military and federal government, many Baloch families struggle to make ends meet. The inability to afford even basic necessities such as food, medicine, and education is a stark reality for the majority of the population. The people of Balochistan live in constant fear. The region is heavily militarized, with a visible presence of army personnel in almost every town and village. Military operations against insurgents have led to widespread displacement, and many Baloch families are forced to live in makeshift camps, where access to basic amenities is limited.

The fear of abduction, torture, and extrajudicial killings is an ever-present threat, especially for activists and political leaders advocating for Baloch rights. The government’s attempts to suppress dissent through fear and violence have created a climate of distrust and disillusionment among the Baloch people. Similarly, the situation in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir , also known as Azad Jammu and Kashmir, is one of neglect, repression, and widespread suffering. While Pakistan claims that the region is prospering under its administration, the reality is that the people of POK face a series of challenges that hinder their growth and development. The people of POK are under constant political and social repression. While they do not have full political freedom, the Pakistani government claims that they enjoy autonomy. In reality, the region is controlled by the Pakistan military and its local proxy government, which holds significant power. The people of POK do not have the freedom to choose their destiny or govern themselves independently.

Many political activists and local leaders have been silenced for speaking out against the lack of true autonomy and the government’s failure to address their demands. Human rights violations, including arbitrary detentions, restrictions on free speech, and suppression of dissent, are commonplace in POK. Like Balochistan, the healthcare and education systems in POK are in a deplorable state. Despite receiving funds from the central government in Pakistan, the people of POK have little to show for it. Healthcare facilities are few and far between, and those that exist are underfunded and lack the necessary resources to provide adequate care.

Similarly, the education system in POK is struggling, with many children unable to attend school due to a lack of infrastructure and resources. Teachers are often underpaid, and educational institutions are not equipped to provide quality education to students. This leaves the younger generation ill-prepared for the challenges of the modern world and further limits their opportunities. Unemployment and inflation are major issues in POK, where the economy is largely reliant on agriculture, tourism, and remittances from abroad. The lack of industrialization and investment in the region has left many people without stable sources of income. Those who do find work often face low wages and poor working conditions.

The inflationary pressures have made life even more difficult for the people of POK, who are already struggling with high unemployment rates. The soaring prices of food, fuel, and other essentials have placed immense financial strain on families. As a result, many people in POK are forced to live in poverty, with no hope for a better future. Like Balochistan, POK is heavily militarized, and the presence of the Pakistani Army is felt everywhere. While the region is technically a "disputed" area, the military's heavy-handed approach towards dissent and local resistance has led to a climate of fear. Citizens live in constant fear of surveillance, arbitrary arrests, and political repression. The people of POK, like those in Balochistan, are often victims of human rights violations carried out by the security forces.

The fear of military intervention and the lack of political freedoms have left the people of POK feeling trapped and unable to assert their rights. Those who protest against the government’s policies or demand greater autonomy often face brutal consequences. The people of Balochistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir continue to endure a life of hardship and struggle, faced with political oppression, economic instability, inadequate healthcare, and fear for their safety. The Pakistani government's claims of progress and development in these regions are far removed from the daily realities faced by the people who live there. These regions remain in a state of neglect, with the government continuing to ignore the needs and demands of the local populations.

The international community must raise its voice in support of the people of Balochistan and POK, advocating for their right to self-determination, basic human rights, and access to essential services. It is time for the Pakistani government to stop hiding behind empty claims of progress and acknowledge the suffering of the people living in these regions. Only through genuine reforms, respect for human rights, and the granting of autonomy can the people of Balochistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir hope for a better future. Until then, their struggles will continue, and their cries for justice will remain unheard.
